USB 3 - Is This The Death Of Firewire?

If you have been around for more than a few years then undoubtedly you will remember the frustratingly painful floppy drives that used to be the only way to effectively transfer files between computers. Frustrating of course because often the floppy would not write or even more frustratingly would not read on the donor machine.

USB 1.0 which was first introduced in 1996 was still an emerging standard so if we had a larger file we had to span the data across many floppies which I remember was a real pain at the time.

But as files grew larger the floppy simply did not make the grade, but as time passed the CD writer came of age which could hold a hefty 500mb of data, still a little more than most people required and media was originally quite dear as well.

USB was making rapid gains fortunately and manufacturers were coming up with many new uses for this very user friendly (operating system permitting) plug and play capability, and the pen drive was borne not a moment to soon in my opinion. Mobile data transfer capacity rocketed upwards from a humble 2mb and it did not seem too long until the capacity of USB pen drives surpassed that of the CD.

The computer repair and IT industries where some of the first serious adopters of pen drives primarily due to the fact that system tools could be easily carried on a flash drive and with the larger capacities reduced the need to carry around a number of CD disks used for diagnostics or computer maintenance utilities.

As capacities grew though faster data transfer speeds were needed and this led to the emergence of the second generation of USB …USB 2.0.

The emergence of USB 2.0 and hi speed USB was a bit of a debacle for many consumers however as many USB pen drives and PCI cards were sold at the time claiming to be USB 2.0 but it was not made clear that the devices still only had the transfer speeds of 12mbps as opposed to 480 mbps.The problem was so widespread that many countries trading standards bodies were involved due to consumer lobbying for clearer packaging.

All of that seems lost in the past know as the standard has emerged and is widely accepted by many as the de facto transfer protocol although the firewire camp would disagree but as technology matures time will tell.

The USB pen drive has really risen to the challenge to take advantage of the USB interface and storage capacities are enormous and far beyond most peoples requirements, What were almost in the beginning icons of your technical prowess have now become a mainstream device and sales are said to exceed 150 million units per year just for pen drives alone. The USB interface is also said to be present in over 6 billion consumers devices and this number is growing at over 30% per annum.

Increases in drive capacities has raised a number of issues across many industry sectors including the data recovery industry, which has had to evolve new USB memory recovery techniques for recovering data from these flash based devices.

Transferring data has become so easy that scant regard has been paid to data backup and equally in the drive to manufacture cheaper products manufacturing standards appear to have slipped resulting in memory controller errors, which of course in turn has led to an increase of lost data.

Some Data recovery companies have of course stepped up the mark and the USB memory recovery industry is now alive and well.

Another problem area with plug and play devices is that of data security and the sheer ease of file transfer has given many business and government bodies severe data security headaches resulting in extreme cases to the USB interface being disabled on computers, Pc’s and laptops in security sensitive environments.

As it seems with all technology every development brings us even greater speed and the new USB 3.0 standard is no exception promising data transfer speed 10x greater than current specs which will give us transfer speeds around 5Gbps.

This very fast transfer speed may of course signal the end of the older firewire standard which has been falling behind more recently.

USB 3.0 standards have been ratified and the first devices are expected to be available towards the end of the year and it will also be interesting to see if Windows 7 ready boost feature will be able to increase the operating systems performance far greater than is apparent in Windows Vista.

What is RAM and What is Hard Drive Explained

When it comes to a computer, there are so many basic computer terms like RAM, megahertz, gigabytes, etc. that people can find confusingthat can confuse people and leave them asking questions like “What is RAM?”, “What is a hard drive?”.

Having a better understanding of some of computer terminology like this can help you feel more comfortable using your computer, helping you get better at them more easily.

A lot of people I talk to seem to be apologetic about their lack of knowledge. It’s too bad people feel that way; they really shouldn’t.

What I tell them is that while they may not know as much as I do about computers, there’s nothing wrong with that, and they probably know about stuff I know nothing about. All you need is someone who takes the time to explain things to you in a way that makes sense.

One term many people confuse is memory (also known as RAM), and hard drive storage space.

RAM stands for Random Access Memory (don’t worry, you don’t need to remember that!). It is a temporary working space the computer uses to get work done, which gets emptied when the computer is turned off.

Think of it like a work bench or table. You have a project you’re working on and you do your project on the table and when you’re done, you tidy it all up.

The hard drive is the main place your computer uses to store information. It looks like a rectangular metal box about 3.5″ wide (or 2.5″ on a laptop), which contains a non-removable disk. It is the disk inside the drive which stores everything.

Think of it as a set of shelves where you store the tools or materials for your project — when you want to work on something you choose the things you need from the set of shelves, put them on the bench and work on the project.

This is like when you run a program; the computer loads the program from the hard drive into memory.

So the larger the space, the more you can store — so to put it another way the more programs you can have installed, the more songs or pictures or videos you can save on your computer.

Many people accidentally call their computer (the big box-like thing hooked up to the screen) a hard drive, but this is based on a misunderstanding. Both RAM and the hard drive are parts located inside of the computer, and most people never actually see these parts.

Most people who have a fairly new computer have a ton of more space than they’ll ever have any hope of filling. Few people ever fill them up, unless they are hording a lot of big files like music or pictures, or especially video files. Saving complete movies on your computer can really eat up space very quickly.

If someone tells you need more memory, or or you get an error message about being low on memory, this usually means you don’t have enough RAM. This can slow your computer down drastically.

Think of the table idea again: if your bench is very small, you can’t fit everything you need on it to get your work done, so you’re constantly wasting time moving stuff off and back onto the table to get your work done, if you can work at all.

Both RAM and hard drive space are measured with the same terms: kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), and gigabytes (GB). This may be one reason people confuse the two pieces of jargon.

So why is it that you buy a computer one year that has a lot of RAM, and two or three years go by, why do people tell you you don’t have enough RAM? This is because each year the average size of software, and the amount of memory it requires, gets bigger.

It’s as if the tools you use on your workbench keep growing every year so you eventually have to get a larger bench.

If your computer seems to be running more slowly recently, or you’ve been having odd errors, it could be that you need to upgrade your memory, which is inexpensive and can add life to your computer. It’s not a cure-all for a slow computer, but it can help.

Remember, computer basics and the terminology doesn’t have to be something that gives you a headache, just as long as you get an explanation that makes sense!

Primary Schools - Teaching Technology

A recent review of the national curriculum for England's primary school has determined that IT and technology should be a new centre piece, given equal time to core subjects such as English and Maths.

Former chief inspector of schools, Jim Rose has made several recommendations including a new focus on speaking and listening skills.He also said that children should be able to start school in the September following their 4th birthday.  The report was commissioned amongst fears that school timetables had become too ‘cluttered’ has stressed the importance of computers in schools and in internet use in particular being ingrained into the curriculum from an early age.

This focus on the importance of the use of IT and computers in schools was brought to light in early April when the new proposals were misinterpreted by many media outlets as ‘teaching Twitter in schools’.  The real plans aim to educate children in various aspects of computer usage, from computer presentations to podcasting.

In his interim report, Sir Jim has suggested that there should be around six broader areas of learning as opposed to up to 14 more traditional individual subjects such as history, geography and science.

The underlying train of thought is that if ICT in schools was ignored, a generation of children not versed in all things digital could emerge.It is the opinion of many that this would be detrimental to an economy that relies heavily on the IT and digital sectors.

Teaching unions have been welcoming of the proposed changes, the most radical shake up of the curriculum in 20 years, but have continued to criticize the curriculums seeming overreliance on testing of children.Some MPs have also welcomed the changes provided that they weren't brought in at the expense of 'dumbing down' the curriculumm, insisting that the proposals shouldn't prioritize 'headline grabbing gimmicks' at the expense of bettering children's education.

There is only one reason why people choose to take online degrees and it is not because they just desire something to do. People opting to take a degree online will only do so if they want to better themselves or change career and have something preventing them from going back to a campus college full time.

They might have family to look after, they might have to work full time as well as studying, or they could have a busy life that they can’t cut back on to return to school. Whatever the reason, an online degree can help individuals get to where they want to go. However, it can only do so if an employer does not question the fact that they have an online degree.

Online education is still a hot topic amongst employers for a variety of reasons. Many employers welcome online tutorial qualifications because they recognize the fact that the people that do train online have crucial qualities that the competition may not have and that they are also trained to the same level as any one completing a campus course.

However, there are still some conventionalist bosses out there who will still query the fact that the people failed to sit in a study room for three or 4 years. For some reason, those companies don’t understand an online degree as of value.

However, these employers are few and far between now solely and simply because the web degree graduates are filling jobs that can never have otherwise been filled. They are responding to the demand and helping the country to run much smoother than it has done in a considerable time. Honestly , online college degrees and technical qualifications have revolutionized the way the arena of education and the arena of industry work.

Although perspectives are changing, nobody taking an online degree should expect not to be challenged when it is presented in a resume or in an employment interview because it will most likely still be a topic of discussion.

Attending a campus establishment makes the degree easily identifiable and easy to track in terms of what the candidate has indeed completed and what was left superb. Online degrees are not as straightforward to track and can turn out to be quite tough to substantiate too.

However, both have a tendency to have the same quantity of work involved with the latter providing far more useful personal qualities the latter re working off one’s own initiative and resource management talents. The one question a potential employer will always ask though is why the applicant selected to take an online degree instead of a campus course. This is a question that you mostly have to be ready for and have a good answer prepared.

No matter how well you try and make preparations for an interview, you can never count on which way an employer will go or indeed what view of an internet degree he or she will take so you must have answers prepared for each eventuality. Attempting to predict the reaction will most likely land you in more difficulty re answers and reasons than assuming the worst.

Always assuming the worst could be the best advice that you could take as you are then prepared for anything. If you are assured and put religion in your degree, providing evidence to substantiate the fact that it is real, it should no longer hold you back!

Twitter came to the attention of the wider world with the recent New York plane crash/rescue where a participant took a photograph on his camera phone. Through Twitter, it was flashed around the phone before the “traditional” news agencies were on the scene.

President Obama also used twitter to update followers on his presidential campaign.

So what is twitter?

Twitter is an online microblogging service.

What?

OK, in real language, its a cross between a blog, a text message and a conversation that the rest of the world can hear.

It is completely free for anyone to register.

“Twitterers” can post short messages (up to 140 characters in length) which can be read by their “followers” (people who chose to receive updates from this person or organisation).

Think for a second of the power of this - and bear in mind that a message can contain a link to a webpage, a photograph, video clip etc etc. It’s like being able to send a message to the world…

So why should I create a learning environment in twitter?

Well, one of the advantages of online training is that both participants don’t have to be present at the same time for an event to take place. That’s exactly the same in twitter.

It’s tricky to rely on email, people may use more than one computers, spam filters can kill genuine message - in short, don’t rely on email…

With twitter though, everything is displayed on a webpage and (subject to user remembering user name & password) can be displayed anywhere in the world.

So, a teacher or trainer can send a booklist or reading list to students the week before an event via twitter.

When you go into twitter to set up your account, you can specify that your updates are protected (made private)

This is how to do it
When you have registered at twitter.com - go to the top right hand corner of the account screen & tick the “settings” option.

Next, tick the “protect my updates” box. This means that your updates, (posts) will not be published in the “public timeline” - messages that are entered by twitterers all over the world.

Just click on the “send request” button” to email a request.

So, by co-ordinating users to protect updates - you can, to some extent use twitter to create a free learning (or any other) environment.
